"It's So Quiet"
music and lyrics by Cecille Elliott
SSAA 9-part voicing
a contemporary choral chamber piece
commissioned by Resonance Ensemble, Portland, Oregon February 2025
Text:
Is anybody out there? Is anybody listening? This broken heart of mine Is threatening to desert me Tired of answers alluding me In this ever evolving life It can feel so quiet When the hurricanes blow I know I'm not alone But sometimes it feels that way Still hope inside me lingers Refusing to go away Is that why it hurts this much When I'm seeking a better life And the answers stay quiet When the hurricanes blow? I've spent so many years rebuilding with Tools I can't seem to Tools that are hard to Grip with tired hands If I could make a case For those of us who try I'd say we're just as worthy As those who easily fly There's not a single thing wrong with you If it takes more to live your life I hope that gives you solace When the hurricanes blow And I think it's really something To seek hope when it's dark out I can choose to trust my wild heart I can lay trust my heart's wild hope

"We Are Murmurs"
music and lyrics by Cecille Elliott
SATBB 5-part voicing
a contemporary choral/vocal jazz chamber piece
commissioned by Resonance Ensemble, Portland, Oregon January 2023
Text:
We are murmurs calling out We are murmurs calling out We are breaking, separating We keep on separating from each other We live, we die We love, we cry We are starlight galaxies apart We keep on separating from each other Didn't wanna see it, so it came from no where Was there a warning? There was a -- It was dead by morning Don't wanna believe it, but there's no escaping it Was there a warning? This wasn't what I planned No, I wasn't ready for -- No I wasn't ready, I wasn't ready Bury our history, make it a mystery And we'll keep separating from each other And looking back only to blame the other So we'll keep separating from each other
